Brief: define the capture task before choosing an Android PDA

Handheld mobile computers fit high-volume work where a phone camera is too slow or fragile. The useful brief covers label types, scan distance, warehouse lighting, drop exposure, glove use, Wi-Fi coverage, shift length, WMS or ERP client, offline behavior, charging method, accessory needs and policy controls. Vantora uses that brief to shortlist a proven Android handheld platform and identify which validation checks must pass before a batch is staged. The two workflows behind most of these programs are scoped in warehouse barcode scanning and inventory counting devices.

Takeaway. Check the app path on the sample. This page does not describe a finished test.

Build: combine scan engine, app state and device policy

The build layer can include 1D or 2D scan engine selection, hardware trigger mapping, keyboard-wedge or SDK behavior, app preload, WMS login path, Wi-Fi profiles, asset labels, MDM enrollment and kiosk or dedicated mode. Available configurations may include IP-rated rugged housings, all-shift or hot-swap batteries, programmable keys, optional WWAN and charging cradles. The result is a handheld computer prepared around the workflow rather than a stock scanner shipped loose.

Validate: test the actual labels and operator path

A sample handheld is accepted only after it proves the scan and app workflow. Vantora validates barcode symbologies, scan speed, scan distance, trigger mapping, WMS input method, offline capture, Wi-Fi profile, battery assumptions, MDM enrollment and kiosk posture. If the app depends on a scanner SDK, that SDK dependency is recorded before production so later batches do not drift to a different engine or input method. For a repeatable label-to-record review, use the logistics scanner acceptance tests to record field handling, repeated scans and interruption recovery.

  • Customer label set and scan-distance validation
  • Keyboard-wedge or scanner SDK behavior review
  • WMS app preload and permission check
  • Offline capture and deferred sync validation
  • Battery, cradle and staging record review

Stage: ship handhelds ready for operators

Batch staging can include asset labels, serial records, app preload, Wi-Fi or APN profiles, device naming, cradle packing, spare-battery notes and site-specific grouping. For multi-site deployments, Vantora can separate batches by site profile or handoff group so IT and operations receive the same build that passed the pilot.

Rollout: keep the accepted handheld build repeatable

The rollout record connects the approved device model, scan engine option, app version, input mode, policy state, accessory pack and known limitations. That record protects future re-orders from silent substitutions that look similar but scan, charge or enroll differently.

What to send us

ItemWhy we need itExample format
Label or tag samplesRead behavior is checked on your labels and materials, not on a generic claimA few real labels or tags, plus the material they sit on
App package and versionThe sample has to match the build you intend to shipPackage name and version code
Offline windowOffline behavior depends on the specific management stackHow long a device may stay offline, and what must still work
Workflow to acceptThe matrix records the task the sample must completeThe steps a user finishes, and what “pass” means
Quantity and reorderA planning band is not a delivery guaranteeA range, and whether you expect a reorder

Pertanyaan Umum

Is a handheld mobile computer the same as an Android PDA?

In many buying contexts, yes. An Android PDA usually refers to a handheld mobile computer with a dedicated scan engine, trigger and rugged body.

Can Vantora validate our exact barcode labels?

Yes. Sample testing should use your label set, warehouse lighting and scan distance so the accepted device reflects the real workflow.

Does the scanner integrate with our WMS?

Only when the app supports the selected scanner SDK or keyboard-wedge input and the sample passes that path. Vantora validates the selected input path before batch staging.

Can handhelds work offline?

They can when the WMS or inventory app supports offline capture. Deferred sync, duplicate handling and recovery behavior should be tested on the sample.

Can devices arrive labeled and ready for the warehouse?

Yes. Batch staging can include asset labels, serial records, Wi-Fi profiles, app preload, cradles, batteries and site handoff notes.
